Types of Migraines

The Various Types of Migraines You Should Be Aware of

Migraine is a neurological disorder characterized by recurrent severe or moderate headaches that are often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to sounds, light, and smell. There are approximately 38 million people in the United States suffering from migraines that happen from 4 or more times per month. Different triggers cause a migraine, and the most common are hormonal changes in women, stress, certain drinks (coffee and alcohol), weather changes, and certain medications.

Types of Migraines

There are 6 different types of migraine:

Migraine with aura

This type of migraine affects approximately 25% of people. The symptom that helps to distinguish this migraine from other types is the presence of aura, a series of visual and sensory changes that start from 10 to 30 minutes prior to a migraine attack.

Migraine without aura

Most migraine attacks occur without auras. This type of migraine starts on one side of the head and moves around by making the pain increase. People experiencing this type feel dizzy, nauseous, or sensitive to light.

Menstrual migraine

It is triggered by hormonal changes in women. It affects 60% of women and usually occurs a few days before periods.

Vestibular migraine

The main symptom of this type is vertigo, the sensation of moving when the person is actually not. It affects 40% of people.

Silent migraine

If you are experiencing aura symptoms, but no headache, you might have this rare type of migraine. In most cases, it does not last longer than a couple of hours.

Abdominal migraine

With this type of migraine, individuals experience abdominal pain instead of a headache. An abdominal migraine causes the pain near the belly button, along with other typical migraine symptoms.
