Herniated Disc

Both herniated disc and bulging disc are conditions treated with chiropractic care at Chiropractic of Bellevue. These conditions are related to problems with the spinal discs in the neck or upper or lower back. Acute or chronic pain may develop depending on the cause and severity of the condition. Our licensed chiropractor, Dr. Owens, is here to help relieve pain in patients who prefer natural, drug-free chiropractic adjustments and therapies in Bellevue.

Herniated Disc

What Causes a Disc to Herniate or Bulge?

Intervertebral discs are cushiony cartilage located between the vertebrae and help absorb shocks directed to the spine. "Herniated disc" is the medical name for a damaged or ruptured disc. In the case of a bulging or "slipped" disc, the cartilage protrudes or slips from its position. It can then irritate or pinch nearby spinal nerves resulting in pain. Left untreated, it can lead to disc herniation and disabling pain. These conditions are commonly caused by injury from a fall or auto accident, heavy lifting, poor posture, repetitive use, or disc degeneration due to aging.

Bulging or Herniated Disc Symptoms

When a disc is herniated, you may experience a sharp stabbing pain, unlike the dull aching pain that typically occurs due to a bulging disc. Bulging or herniated disc symptoms also include nerve pain or inflammation, numbness, or tingling. Pain may also shift to these regions of the body:

  • Upper back
  • Shoulder
  • Chest
  • Lower back
  • Buttock or
  • Leg (sciatic pain)

How Disc Pain is Diagnosed

Our Bellevue chiropractor will assess your symptoms and medical history and perform a comprehensive examination. Certain tests may be done including diagnostic x-rays or similar imaging tests to examine the spine and make a diagnosis on the underlying cause of the pain.

How Our Chiropractor Treats Bulging or Herniated Disc

Based on the diagnosis, Dr. Owens will set up a treatment plan to give you the best results. Pain from a bulging disc is typically more passive and can be treated with incremental adjustments while more aggressive spinal adjustment techniques are required to relieve severe pain and other herniated disc symptoms.

To stop bulging and herniation, flexion-distraction techniques can effectively stretch the spine to create more space between the vertebrae that surround the affected disc. Manipulation Under Anesthesia, or MUA, is a quick non-surgical manipulation technique used to alleviate pain associated with severe or chronic disc herniation and nerve compression.
