There's no arguing that seatbelts save countless lives. However, there are cases where the only auto accident injury sustained in a major collision was inflicted by a seat belt. We know this first hand since our Bellevue chiropractor treats such injuries. Now please do not take this wrong. We are not saying you shouldn't fasten your seatbelt every time you get into your vehicle. What we are saying is please take the time to make sure it is properly placed.
Seatbelt Dos and Don'ts
- Do place your shoulder belt across the middle of your chest and safely away from your neck.
- Do place your lap belt across your hips making sure it is below your abdomen.
- Do not fasten your seatbelt so tightly that you cannot move about freely in your seat.
- Do not place your seatbelt behind your back or under your arm just because it feels more comfortable.
Taking the time to adjust your seatbelt so it fits properly goes a long way towards keeping you safe. However, it does not guarantee that you won't incur some sort of bruise or scrape should you be involved in a minor traffic mishap.
How Chiropractic Treatments Address Seatbelt Injuries
An auto accident injury may take anywhere between twenty-four and seventy-two hours to become fully apparent. It is not uncommon for patients to wait a few days to seek our chiropractor's help. If you have recently been involved in an auto accident, our chiropractor will evaluate your musculoskeletal system to determine the location and severity of your injuries. When the source of your pain and immobility has been determined, we will create a chiropractic care plan tailored to your needs.
The sudden impact of a collision can also cause whiplash and its symptoms include neck pain, stiffness, headaches at the base of the skull, and tenderness and pain in the upper back, arms, and shoulders. Our chiropractor usually recommends a series of spinal adjustments to alleviate whiplash. Spinal adjustments realign the spine and in so doing, relieve the pressure on the intervertebral discs that are causing pain.
