Common Causes of Bulging Disc

Bulging Disc Pain in Bellevue: Common Causes and Treatments

A bulging disc can be unbearable for many sufferers. The pain and discomfort can make it difficult to walk, move, control bladder and bowel function, and much more. Learn more about bulging discs, how they occur, and potential treatments below.

What Is a Bulging Disc?

The spine is made up of many interlocking bones, which are known as the vertebrae. This system of bones supports the spine and allows movement and bending of the back.

In between these bones are spongy discs. These discs absorb any shock during movement and keep the bones from rubbing against one another. These discs are gel-like cushions that are made to adapt to the body’s movements. Sometimes, when too much pressure is placed on them, they become compressed and bulge out. When this happens, they often press against a nerve, causing a lot of discomfort and pain.

Most Common Causes of a Bulging Disc

The most common risk factor of a bulging disc is age. This is because the gel in the cushion dries out over time, and with less gel, the disc can more easily be compressed.

However, anything that causes a shift in the gel of a spinal disc can cause a bulging disk, such as the following:

  • Accidents, especially auto accidents
  • A sedentary lifestyle
  • Improper lifting techniques
  • Weak core or back muscles
  • Carrying excess weight, especially around the stomach
  • Repetitive twisting, bending, lifting, such as in jobs that require constant physical strain
  • Poor posture
  • Forceful movements, such as in sports
  • Running without good orthopedic support

Bulging Disc Treatment

A bulging disc can be treated, typically through a combination of activities. The most common include:

  • Exercises to help strengthen muscles in the affected area
  • Home care, such as heating pads
  • Diet and weight management, if weight is a contributing factor
  • Stretching routine for the affected area
  • Non-invasive chiropractic treatments, such as manipulations, decompression, and stretching the spine
