Fibromyalgia & Chiropractic Care
Fibromyalgia is one of the most common and least understood conditions in the world. The talented and caring staff at Chiropractic of Bellevue has treated thousands of patients in the Bellevue area for conditions including fibromyalgia syndrome or FMS.
What is Fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia is a condition that affects soft tissues and the muscles of the body. The exact cause is still not entirely understood. However, some believe it has to do with how pain signals from the nerves are processed by the spinal cord and brain. It is often described as a condition in which the nerves are overly sensitive to stimuli.
While the cause of fibromyalgia is not known, there are several factors that are believed to make somebody more likely to have the condition. It is more common among women than men and tends to run in families, indicating a genetic link. In addition, those who have other painful inflammatory conditions or infections, mood disorders like anxiety or depression, or who have been emotionally/physically abused are more likely to have fibromyalgia.
One factor that makes fibromyalgia difficult to diagnose is the fact that there is no definite set of symptoms that every sufferer experiences. While widespread pain, fatigue, and sleep problems are common, not everyone has these symptoms and if they do, they do not experience them in a uniform manner. There are also additional symptoms that may or may not be present. In other words, the symptoms of each individual’s fibromyalgia are often as unique as they are. Your chiropractor will work closely with you to develop a plan to tackle your unique set of symptoms.
The most common symptoms of Fibromyalgia include:
- Pain and tender points
- Concentration and memory problems
- Insomnia and other sleep problems
- Dry mouth, nose, eyes
- Morning stiffness
- Anxiety and/or depression
- Tingling and numbness in legs, feet, arms, and hands
- Problems with urination
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome
- Painful menstrual cramps
- Sensitivity to sound, light, cold, and heat
Chiropractic Help for Fibromyalgia
While there is no cure for fibromyalgia, there are a number of therapies and treatments that have been shown to be effective in relieving the symptoms and restoring some quality of life. The most essential of these are low impact exercises designed to stretch muscles, build endurance, and strengthen muscles improving the ability to move with ease.
A chiropractor can help guide you towards exercises designed to avoid exacerbating the pain. This is essential as the wrong exercises can actually aggravate fibro symptoms. Furthermore, complementary therapies offered by chiropractors – like targeted massage, acupuncture, and manual manipulation – are shown to help.
