How much force is put on the spine in a car accident?
There can be anywhere from 20g's of force to 150 g's of force to the body in a car accident. With or without a seat belt the g-force can be deadly and have long-lasting physical symptoms.
The amount of G's that a person receives is merely determined by their weight, the weight of their car, the speed of the approaching car and other factors. Obviously if you are driving a semi tractor and you get hit by a Smart car you are not likely going to experience many g's even if the Smart car is cruising at you at 50 mph.
A "small" crash of even 5-10 mph (in a regular car) does create enough g's to cause whiplash and cause hyper-extension of the spine and neck and other damage.
It is best, if in a car crash, even if small to at least get an x-ray and have an evaluation done by a Chiropractor. Sometimes the damage is non-extant and sometimes it is severe.
Many symptoms of a spinal injury don't become obvious until much later. A jammed up or subluxated spine/spinal joint can create delayed reactions months down the road so it is good to get checked out.
