LOWER BACK PAIN – Alternatives to surgery

Many of the nerves of the spine are in the facet joints, the two interlocking ‘fingers’ at the back of each spinal bone — vertebra. The normally smooth surfaces on which these joints glide, can become rough, irritated, inflamed and sore.

Surgical treatment often involves removing these facet joints and exposing the spinal cord. Another cause of lower back pain can be a bulging or herniated disc or disc tissue putting pressure on the spinal cord or a nearby nerve root.  The result is often numbness, tingling and/or pain in the leg. Cutting away the herniated disc tissue can permanently alter its ability to separate and cushion the nearby bones.  This (surgery) rarely addresses the underlying structural causes of the problem.

The chiropractic approach is to help and restore a more normal motion and position to help restore a more normal motion and position of affected spinal bones with chiropractic “adjustments”.  The simplicity and success of this approach has been documented in numerous research projects and has helped many patients AVOID risky surgery.

Many lower back issues can be easily addressed with just a few visits.

Lower back pain results in millions of dollars of lost work and untold pain and suffering every day.  Many factors can be responsible for lower back pain.  Improper sitting or lifting, over-exertion, trauma, accidents, or inherited spinal abnormalities may contribute to the cause.

In the course of the last 14 years as a chiropractor I have dealt with over 8,000 cases of lower back pain.  Since most back pain stems from the above mentioned situations and since chiropractic treatment can resolve these issues I have had excellent results with lower back pain.
